The Daddy Long Legs Extremely Rare
Wine
d'Arenberg The Daddy Long Legs Extremely Rare was conceived in 1984, when winemaker Chester Osborn took over the reins at d'Arenberg and set aside 15 barrels of very old tawny.
Predominantly Grenache with some Shiraz and Mataro, its average age is over 40 years. It takes its name from the Daddy Long Legs spiders which over many decades have watched over the barrels in the winery shed.
The solera was laid down in 1966; each year new wine was added until the 1970s. New wine is added due to evaporation, known as the angel's share. By 2005 only five barrels remained; the angels had taken their share.
Made from ultra-ripe bush vine Grenache, the fruit ferments in open tanks followed by foot stomping and basket pressing. Fermentation is stopped by adding grape spirit, before pressing to casks to age.
Light tan, d'Arenberg The Daddy Long Legs Extremely Rare balances intensity and complexity, which only time can achieve. It has rich fruit flavours woven with syrup and spice.
Very limited production, a rare release.
